Departure from Corfu, Lefkas base
Greece's Ionian Islands were where "the blue really begins" as far as writer Lawrence Durrell was concerned! Located on the western side of mainland Greece, they are Seven main Islands -traditionally called the “Heptanese”- that distinguish from many of the Greek islands by their fertile land (blanketed with olive groves sustained by the winter rains) and clear blue waters. They are a popular tourist destination, renowned for their exquisite sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, verdant countryside and charming villages. The mixture of different civilizations and cultures is harmoniously welded together into one piece that is undoubtedly Greek, in a complex of islands where the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean can be explored.
Corfu, the "jewel" of the Ionian Sea, is a cosmopolitan island surrounded by a coastline of stunning beauty. South of Corfu, with few local residents, the romantic island of Paxoi is as tranquil as it is beautiful. The beautiful and green Lefkas (or Lefkada), filled with traditional Greek architecture is a peaceful and unspoilt place with white sandy beaches.
Worldwide famous as the home of Odysseus, Ithaca symbolizes the return to the haven, the discovery and the fulfillment. Peaceful, quiet and undiscovered with a multitude of beaches covering all tastes from sand to pebbles “Ithaca will be always in your mind. Arriving there is what you are destined for” (Cavafy, Ithaca). The largest island of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is a very charming place offering a spectacular coastline. Mostly famous for the exotic beaches, including Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas and Skala, the island was chosen for filming the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The village of Fiscardo is the most cosmopolitan place with a port that receives many yachts every summer.
