Departure from Kos Base
The Dodecanese translates as “the twelve islands”, of which the most well-known are Rhodes and Kos from where you can start your sailing vacation. Those who know their biblical history will have heard of Patmos sometimes called "The Jerusalem of the Aegean", famous for the monastery of Saint John the Theologian.
Karpathos, the third biggest of the chain has a stunning coastline divided between the beaches and bays of the south, and the rough crags of the north. In the traditional sponge divers island of Kalymnos you can find and buy some of the best natural sea sponges in the world.
Smaller, Kasos, Kastellorizo and Symi are less lush than their bigger companions but all have elegant harbors, a legacy of their trading past.
Nisyros, built on a still-active volcano, is a different story, and its dramatic, blackened, landscapes will please geology lovers. Astypalea, on its own to the west of the other islands, feels more part of the Cyclades than the Dodecanese. The more benevolent landscape of Leros and the low-key, and little-visited, charms of Tilos bring the count of 12 to an end.
This is not the end of the Dodecanese, however. The chain includes 14 other, smaller, like Lipsi and Chalki, and others, inhabited to some degree.
Again these islands are not too far apart and you can spend a memorable sailing holiday into a week.
We will be happy to help you create your perfect itinerary, by giving you some suggestions to better explore this very unique group of islands.
